The tense relations between Soviet Russia and the West are lovingly satirized in SILK STOCKINGS, where agents of all kinds cross paths in Paris, far away from both Moscow and Hollywood.

SILK STOCKINGS played for 478 performances on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre starring Hildegarde Neff and Don Ameche.

Ninotchka, a beautiful and stalwart female emissary of the Soviet Commissar of Art, is sent to Paris to manage three fun-loving Soviet agents, who have been dispatched to the French capital to bring home Boroff, a successful Soviet composer on a world tour under the personal management of Steve Canfield, a Hollywood agent. Canfield wants Boroff to defect and write film music for his client, Peggy Dayton. The prim and cold Ninotchka meets Canfield, who instructs her in the delights of capitalist society and also of course, amour. Boroff becomes infatuated with Janice Dayton and has no interest in leaving Western society. Eventually Canfield follows Ninotchka to Russia, but all escape to freedom.

The plot of SILK STOCKINGS is unusually sound. It provides a humorous look at the stereotypical Soviet psyche, and Ninotchka’s attempt to resist the temptations of Paris while valiantly carrying out her political mission, is developed with logic and wit. Satire is not, however, confined to the Kremlin. The story spooks Hollywood movies and jazz music as well.

Cole Porter’s outstanding score includes the ballads "All of You", "Paris Loves Lovers" and "As on Through The Seasons We Sail," satires of Moscow in "Red Blues" and "Hail, Bibinski," as well as "Stereophonic Sound."
